Video: R.C. Sproul: How to Study the Bible
Questions for Reflection and Discussion
1. You've read the benefits of reading the Bible. What influences keep you from reading and studying the Bible on a regular basis? What can you do to overcome them?
2. How can R. C. Sproul’s three principles of interpretation help you get more out of your Bible reading? Give one benefit for each principle.
3. Have you ever “twisted” scripture to suit your own false beliefs? Have you ever twisted scripture to justify your own wrong behavior? What happened, and how did you straighten out?
4. List three things you can do -- starting immediately --to correctly handle the Word of truth (hint: quick fixes and magic formulas won't work).
5. Does anything in the Bible really bother you? What is it? (Don't be afraid to be honest. God isn't going to hit you with a bolt of lightning.) What are three practical things you can do to deal with your dilemma?
6. Can people who disagree with each other's interpretation of a particular Bible verse or passage still get along? Is “agreeing to disagree” always enough when interpretations differ?
7. Review the two different methods of Bible translation (word for word, thought for thought) and Bible paraphrasing. Is your Bible a paraphrase, a word-for-word translation, or a thought-for-thought translation? How did you happen to choose your Bible? His reading and studying from more than one Bible translation a good idea? Why or why not?
